Do I need a 4G camera with a SIM card or a Wi-Fi camera?

This really comes down to one thing β€” is reliable Wi-Fi available where the camera will be installed?

πŸ“Ά We recommend a 4G camera if:

  • There is no Wi-Fi available at the camera location.
  • The camera is being installed on a farm, construction site, remote property, shed, gate or other location away from Wi-Fi.
  • Your Wi-Fi signal does not reliably reach the area where the camera will be installed.
  • You want the camera to operate independently from your home or business internet connection.
  • You need a camera in a location where installing or extending Wi-Fi would be difficult.

A 4G camera connects to the mobile network using a SIM card, similar to a mobile phone, so it does not require Wi-Fi to operate.

πŸ›œ We recommend a Wi-Fi camera if:

  • You have reliable Wi-Fi coverage at the exact location where the camera will be installed.
  • The camera is being installed around your home, office, workshop or other building with existing Wi-Fi.
  • You don’t need the camera to operate independently from your existing internet connection.

A Wi-Fi camera connects directly to your existing Wi-Fi network, so no SIM card is required.

πŸ’‘ Not sure which one you need?

A simple rule to remember:

Good Wi-Fi available at the camera location β†’ Choose Wi-Fi

No Wi-Fi, poor Wi-Fi or a remote location β†’ Choose 4G

If you’re still unsure, give us a call and let us know where you’re planning to install the camera. We’ll be happy to point you in the right direction.

What’s the difference between 24/7 Recording and Motion-Only Recording?

Both options provide motion detection and alerts, but the main difference is what the camera records between those motion events.

πŸŽ₯ 24/7 Recording

A 24/7 recording camera records continuously, day and night, while still detecting motion and sending notifications to your phone when activity is detected.

The biggest advantage is that even if something happens outside the camera’s motion detection range, or motion isn’t triggered for any reason, the footage is still being recorded. You can simply go back through the recordings and see what happened.

This makes 24/7 recording particularly useful for farms, rural properties, construction sites, gates, entrances and busy areas where having a continuous record of activity can be important.

Because these cameras are constantly recording, they generally require larger batteries and larger solar panels to provide the additional power required.

Some of our popular 24/7 recording options include the 4G Q4, Q6 Max Pro and 4G Site Project Camera, with Wi-Fi versions also available.

🚨 Motion-Only Recording

Motion-only cameras record when motion or a detection event triggers the camera.

When activity is detected, the camera begins recording the event and can send a notification directly to your phone.

These cameras are an excellent option for most everyday security applications where you primarily want the camera to record when something actually happens.

πŸ’‘ Which one should I choose?

If you want the security of knowing there is always footage to look back on, even if an event wasn’t detected, a 24/7 recording camera is the better option.

If you mainly want your camera to record and notify you when activity is detected, a motion-only recording camera may be all you need.

How do the SIM cards work?

πŸ“± All of our 4G security cameras are unlocked and can use any Australian SIM card/provider.

Our cameras generally use around 2–4GB of data per month, so they only require a small data-only mobile plan.

⭐ Our recommended option – ALDI Mobile

For the past 7 years we have been referring our customers to ALDI Mobile, which runs on the Telstra network and has consistently been one of the most affordable options for our cameras.

We can supply an ALDI Mobile SIM card free of charge upon request. You simply activate the SIM with ALDI Mobile and select a suitable data-only plan.

As ALDI Mobile uses the Telstra network, we recommend checking that you have suitable Telstra mobile coverage at the location where the camera will be installed.

πŸ“Ά Alternatively – use your current mobile provider

Another good option is to speak with your existing mobile provider and let them know you have a device that only requires around 2–4GB of data per month.

Many providers offer data-sharing SIMs, which share the data from your existing mobile plan. These can often cost around $5–$10 per month for the additional SIM.

Whichever option you choose, just make sure the SIM is set up with mobile data – you do not need a plan with calls or text messages.

If you’re unsure which SIM or plan will suit your camera, feel free to give us a call and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Can I use Wi-Fi and 4G cameras together in the same system?

βœ… Yes, absolutely.

If you have Wi-Fi available at some locations but need 4G at others, you can simply use a combination of the two.

Most of our camera models are available in both Wi-Fi and 4G versions, allowing you to choose the best connection for each camera location.

For example, you might use Wi-Fi cameras around your home, office or workshop, and 4G cameras at a gate, shed, paddock or another area where your Wi-Fi doesn’t reach.

πŸ“± Both your Wi-Fi and 4G cameras can be added and managed together through the same app, so there’s no need to operate two separate systems.

Simply choose Wi-Fi where you have good Wi-Fi coverage and 4G where you don’t.

Do your cameras have subscription fees or ongoing charges?

βœ… No. Absolutely not.

There are no compulsory subscription fees or ongoing charges to use any of our security cameras or the features and functions advertised with them.

Around 7 years ago, Oz Security Camera Warehouse made the decision to remove cameras requiring ongoing subscription fees or charges from our entire range.

πŸ“± The camera apps are free to use. Like most security camera apps, some may offer additional optional AI features or other extras that can be purchased if you choose to use them. These are completely optional and are not required for the camera to perform its advertised functions.

You purchase the camera, and it’s yours to use – no ongoing subscription required.

What storage options are available for my recordings?

Our cameras offer a few different ways to store your video recordings, images and motion events. The best option will depend on the camera and how you intend to use it.

⭐ 1. SD Card Storage – Our Recommended Option

All of our security cameras support SD card storage, ranging from 32GB up to 512GB, depending on the camera model.

Once the SD card is inserted into the camera, you don’t need to remove it to access your recordings. Everything can be accessed directly through the camera’s app.

πŸ“± From the app you can:

  • View your recordings and motion events
  • Download and save videos or images
  • Share or send recordings
  • Delete and manage stored footage
  • Access your recordings remotely

Once the SD card reaches capacity, the camera will automatically overwrite the oldest continuous recordings with new footage, so you don’t need to continually replace or clear the card. Motion/event recordings can also be managed and deleted through the app when required.

SD cards are reusable and there are no ongoing storage fees.

πŸ’Ύ SD cards can be added when purchasing your camera through our website. We have always aimed to keep our SD card pricing as low as possible and are one of the more affordable Australian retailers for security camera SD cards.

☁️ 2. Cloud Storage

Many of our cameras also have optional cloud storage available through their app for a small monthly fee.

Cloud storage allows supported recordings to be stored online rather than relying solely on storage within the camera.

This is completely optional – you do not need a cloud subscription to use your camera.

πŸ–₯️ 3. FTP Server Storage

Selected cameras, particularly within our more commercial range, also support FTP server storage.

FTP is generally used by businesses or commercial clients who want recordings or images transferred to their own remote server.

This option normally requires some initial technical setup and is often configured by the client’s IT department or network administrator.

FTP availability varies between camera models, so if this is a requirement for your project, please contact us and we’ll confirm which cameras support it.

πŸ’‘ Which option do we recommend?

For the majority of our customers, SD card storage is the simplest and most cost-effective option. There are no ongoing storage fees, and your recordings can still be accessed and managed remotely through the camera app without having to physically remove the SD card.

I’m not very tech savvy – do you provide help setting up my camera?

βœ… Absolutely – you don’t need to be tech savvy to use our cameras.

Our cameras are designed to be plug and play, with no complicated wiring or electrician required for setup. They’re designed so that the everyday customer can install and set them up themselves.

Our staff are highly experienced with the cameras and apps we supply, and we’re happy to talk you through the entire setup step by step over the phone.

πŸ”§ CAMERA TROUBLESHOOTING

πŸ’‘ Quick Tips to Make Your Camera Setup Easier

A few simple things can make setting up your new camera much quicker and easier.

πŸ”§ Set the camera up BEFORE installing it

Always set your camera up on the ground, on a table or workbench before permanently installing it.

It’s much easier to insert the SIM and SD card, access the reset button, scan the QR code and complete the app setup while the camera is in front of you – rather than trying to do it once it’s mounted up a pole or on the side of a building!

πŸ”‹ Give the battery a good charge first

Before your initial setup, we recommend giving the camera battery a good charge for several hours.

Use the charging cable supplied with the camera together with a suitable USB wall charger, such as one you would normally use to charge a mobile phone.

Starting with a well-charged battery makes the whole setup process much easier.

πŸ›œ Setting up a Wi-Fi camera?

Make sure you’re setting the camera up somewhere with a good, strong Wi-Fi signal.

If the Wi-Fi signal is weak during setup, move closer to your modem/router and complete the initial connection before installing the camera.

πŸ“Ά Setting up a 4G camera?

Before starting, make sure:

  • Your SIM card is activated and inserted correctly.
  • All supplied antennas are securely fitted to the camera.
  • The antennas are pointing upwards.
  • You’re setting the camera up somewhere with good mobile phone reception.
  • Where possible, set the camera up outside or in an open area with good network coverage.

πŸ“± A quick tip: Check the reception bars on your mobile phone. If you’re struggling to get mobile reception in that location, there’s a good chance the camera may also have difficulty connecting.

⭐ Most importantly – set everything up before mounting the camera

Get the camera online, added to the app and working correctly first.

Once you’ve confirmed everything is working, you can mount the camera in its permanent position knowing the setup is already complete.

My camera won’t connect – what should I check?

If you’re having trouble connecting your camera, don’t worry. Whether you have one of our basic Wi-Fi cameras or a larger commercial camera, the connection process is generally very similar.

Before contacting our technical support team, work through the steps below. In most cases, it’s something very simple.

πŸ“± 1. Make sure you have the correct app

Download the app specifically listed for your camera model.

Open the app and have it ready, but don’t add the camera just yet – we’ll get the camera ready first.

πŸ”” 2. IMPORTANT – Allow the app permissions

When you first download and open the camera app, your phone will ask you to allow certain permissions.

Please make sure you allow these when prompted.

Depending on your phone and the camera app, these may include:

  • 🎀 Microphone – required for two-way audio and speaking through your camera.
  • πŸ“· Photos / Images / Gallery – allows you to save photos and video recordings directly to your phone.
  • πŸ”” Notifications – very important if you want to receive motion and alarm notifications from your camera.
  • πŸ“± Other requested app permissions – if the camera app requests access during the initial setup, we recommend allowing it so all advertised camera functions can operate correctly.

πŸ’‘ If you accidentally select β€œDon’t Allow”, don’t worry. These permissions can be turned back on later through your phone’s Settings. Simply go to Settings β†’ Apps, find your camera app, open the app permissions and make sure the required permissions and notifications are enabled.

πŸ›œ 3. If you have a Wi-Fi camera

Make sure you have a good Wi-Fi signal at the camera location and have your Wi-Fi password ready.

Most of our Wi-Fi cameras connect using a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network.

If your modem is currently only broadcasting 5GHz, contact your internet provider and ask them to enable the 2.4GHz network as well. This is normally a very simple change and does not cost anything to switch this on.

πŸ“Ά 4. If you have a 4G camera

Make sure the SIM card is:

  • Activated
  • Inserted correctly
  • Has an active mobile data only service
  • Has sufficient mobile coverage at the camera location

Our cameras generally only require around 2–4GB of data per month under normal use.

If your 4G camera isn’t connecting, the first things to check are the SIM setup and mobile coverage.

πŸ”‹ 5. Turn the camera on

Make sure the camera has sufficient charge and is switched on.

Look for the camera’s solid blue connection light where applicable. This generally indicates that the camera has successfully connected to the mobile / Wifi network and has adequate service.

If you’re not getting the blue light, recheck the SIM card, its mobile data service and the mobile coverage in your area.

πŸ”„ 6. VERY IMPORTANT – RESET THE CAMERA

This is the step most commonly missed.

Before adding or re-adding a camera to the app, the camera must be reset.

Locate the reset button on your camera and press and hold it firmly until you hear the camera give you an audible prompt or confirm that it has been reset.

Don’t simply press the button quickly – hold it down until the camera responds.

βž• 7. Add the camera to the app

Once the camera has been reset:

  1. Open the camera app.
  2. Select Add Device.
  3. Choose 4G Device or Wi-Fi Device, depending on your camera.
  4. Follow the prompts to add your camera.

The camera should now connect and appear in your app.

πŸ“· 8. Scan the QR code on the CAMERA – not the box

During the setup process, the app may ask you to scan the QR code located on the camera.

⚠️ Important: Always scan the QR code on the camera itself – DO NOT scan the QR code on the camera box or packaging.

Depending on the camera model, the QR code can sometimes be positioned underneath or in a protected area of the camera. This is intentional and helps protect the QR code from sun and weather damage.

It can sometimes be a little tricky to position your phone correctly, but the QR codes are quite sensitive and generally scan very quickly once your phone camera gets a clear view of them.

Once scanned, simply continue following the prompts in the app to complete the setup.

⚠️ 9. What if the connection times out or fails?

If the connection process fails or times out, don’t continually try to add the same camera without resetting it again.

The camera may have partially bound to the app during the unsuccessful attempt.

Close and reopen the app and check whether the camera is still showing.

If it is, remove/delete the camera from the app. On many of our apps this can be done by swiping left on the camera and selecting delete.

Then follow this simple process:

Remove from app β†’ Reset camera β†’ Add camera again

πŸ”„ Remember: Every time you attempt to re-add the camera, you must reset the camera first.

☎️ Still having trouble? We’ll help you.

If you’ve worked through these steps and the camera still won’t connect, give our technical support team a call or send us a text.

Why am I not receiving motion notifications?

If your camera is online and working but you’re not receiving motion notifications on your phone, it generally comes down to a few simple settings.

πŸ”” 1. Check notifications are enabled in the camera app

Open your camera app and check the settings for the camera.

Make sure motion detection / alarm notifications are switched on and that the camera is set to send alerts to your phone.

πŸ“± 2. Check your phone has allowed notifications

Your phone also needs to give the camera app permission to send you notifications.

Go to Settings β†’ Apps β†’ select your camera app β†’ Notifications and make sure notifications are enabled.

If notifications were accidentally denied when you originally installed the app, you can simply turn them back on here.

🚨 3. Check Motion Detection and Auto Tracking

Motion Detection and Auto Tracking are two separate features and should not be switched on at the same time.

On camera models that support Auto Tracking, having both features enabled at the same time can cause them to conflict with each other and may affect your motion alerts.

If you’re having trouble receiving notifications, turn Auto Tracking off and leave Motion Detection switched on, then test the camera again.

πŸ‘€ 4. Make sure the movement is within the camera’s detection range

Make sure the person, vehicle or activity you’re expecting the camera to detect is within the camera’s motion detection range.

If the movement is too far away or outside the detection area, the camera may not trigger a motion event or send a notification.

When testing your notifications, walk through the camera’s normal detection area and check whether an alert is received.

πŸš— 5. Human Detection vs Vehicle Detection

If your camera is detecting people but not detecting vehicles, first make sure your particular camera model is designed to support vehicle detection.

A majority of security cameras are designed primarily for human detection and not all models support vehicle detection.

Human detection and vehicle detection are different features, so a camera supporting human detection does not necessarily mean it will detect or send alerts for vehicles.

If vehicle detection is important for your application, please check the specifications of your camera or contact us and we’ll confirm whether your model supports it.

πŸ”„ 6. Still not receiving notifications?

Once you’ve checked the settings above, completely close and reopen the camera app and test the camera again by walking in front of it.

If you’re still not receiving alerts, give our technical support team a call or send us a text and we’ll help you check the settings.
